Flying in with a fun fact on the Bank Holiday weekend

Enjoying your Bank Holiday? It’s Sir John Lubbock who you need to thank, he introduced the Bank Holiday Act in 1871, he also opened Oldham’s original Library, Art Gallery and Museum in 1883.

Lubbock was a respected scientist, author, banker and Liberal politician and fought to improve labour laws. Originally there were only 4 bank holidays in England; 4 more were introduced in the 1970s.

But what is the connection to the wasp? Lubbock owed a pet wasp which he caught in the Pyrenees and kept until it died 10 months later. He describes learning to feed and stroke it without getting stung.
