Exhibition by Leading Ceramic Artist Felicity Aylieff at Gallery Oldham
Gallery Oldham is showing an exhibition of work by one of Britain’s leading ceramic artists. Out of China: Monumental Porcelain by Felicity Aylieff features giant porcelain vases and is on show from 2 February - 19 April 2008.
Aylieff created the vases in collaboration with Chinese potters during a residency at Mr Yu’s ‘Big Ware’ factory in the historic porcelain centre of Jingdezhen.
They were made using traditional Chinese techniques and Aylieff has experimented with traditional Chinese decoration, but has also looked to her own Western roots. She has experimented with expressive surface painting, layered colours, transfer decoration and carving to create bold and vivid effects. Aylieff has produced a contemporary and very personal approach to painting on ‘big pots’.
The vases range from 1.5 to 3m in height and look stunning in Gallery Oldham’s spectacular glass gallery. The exhibition also features illustrated excerpts from Felicity Aylieff’s journal of her Chinese residency.
Felicity Aylieff is currently a Senior Tutor at the Royal College of Art in London, and Professor of Ceramics at Bath Spa University. She is one of Britain’s most highly regarded ceramic artists whose work blurs the boundaries between art, sculpture and ceramics and she exhibits regularly in Britain and Europe.
Felicity Aylieff will be visiting Gallery Oldham to give a free talk about her stunning work at 2:30pm on Saturday 9 February. This talk is part of an Exhibition Opening Event launching the exhibitions Out of China, Theodore Major 1908-1999 and Trees.
Curator Dinah Winch gives a free lunchtime talk about the exhibition on Wednesday 13 February at 1pm.
Gallery Oldham is situated in the Cultural Quarter, Greaves Street, Oldham, OL1 1AL. The Gallery is open Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm (last admission 4.30pm) and admission is free. For further information call 0161 770 4653 or visit www.galleryoldham.org.uk
