Some Exercise of Power
29 November 2003 - 28 February 2004

Some Exercise of Power is a sculpture exhibition by Brazilian artist Ana Maria Pacheco. Since the1970s she has worked in Britain as a sculptor, painter and printmaker and has established herself as one of the leading figurative artists of our time.
Ana Maria Pacheco's art incorporates symbols and images from the Catholic religion and draws on the myths and rituals of the Brazilian population. Coming from a country with a long history of political, religious and economic repression, it is unsurprising that her work is largely concerned with the use and abuse of power.
This exhibition features larger than life size wooden sculptures that deal with issues of control and the exercise of power. The figures depicted in these works have an eerie and compelling quality that forces us to confront the dark side of human nature.
Exhibition talk at Gallery Oldham by Colin Wiggins (Head of Education at the National Gallery) about the artist's recent work - Saturday 21 February, 2pm. Free, but please book in advance on 0161 911 4653.
