Sisters
5th December 2004 - 12th March 2005

Sisters features striking black and white photography by Clement Cooper of young Muslim women from Oldham, Manchester, Preston and Birmingham.
The images in the exhibition are part of a project that Clement has been working on for a number of years in which he explores the meaning of the Hijab (veil) to young Muslim women.
Alongside his photographs there are a series of audio recordings of these young women talking about their faith. These provide an insight into the differing interpretations of Islam and the Hijab within Britain’s young female Muslim population.
Clement Cooper was born and lives in Manchester, and has exhibited widely throughout the country. The Sisters exhibition coincides with the publication of his fourth book, Sisters, which includes photographs taken during the project as well as a CD of the interviews featured in this exhibition. The Sisters book is available to buy at Gallery Oldham while the exhibition is on show. To order a copy please call 0161 911 4653.
The Sisters project is funded by Arts Council England North West.
