Family Faces
11 December 2004 - 12 March 2005

Sculpture by Shelley Wilson

Family Faces explores genetics and inherited facial resemblance, and is a collaboration between artist Shelley Wilson and Professor David Hopkinson from University College London.

Shelley Wilson’s Anglo-Chinese heredity is the focus of this fascinating exhibition. Facial images of her family are presented through her sculptures and through David Hopkinson’s scanned computer images, which highlight genetic similarities between the family members.

When we look at people from the same family we can often see likenesses. Through sculpture, Family Faces looks at the similarities visible to the eye, and asks if these are the same as the inherited similarities that can be seen in the computer images.

Are the family features amplified or minimised? Does the art help the science and vice versa?
