El Anatsui: Gawu
16 October - 4 December 2004

Earth Cloth, 2003 by El Anatsui

Gawu is a striking exhibition featuring large-scale works, including giant wall cloths, made from recycled materials.

El Anatsui is one of Africa’s most powerful contemporary artists. Originally from Ghana, he now lives in Nigeria and his work draws on traditions from both countries, as well as from contemporary Western art.

He is concerned with using materials available in his environment, and the works in this exhibition are all made from discarded metal objects such as bottle tops, aluminium plates and copper wire.

Gawu is an Oriel Mostyn Gallery Touring Exhibition. The exhibition opens in Black History Month.

Free talk by the artist - Saturday 16 October 1:30pm
