Echoes of War
5 November 2005 – 28 January 2006

Train tracks on the approach to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp

Gallery Oldham marks the sixtieth anniversary of the end of World War II with this emotive and nostalgic exhibition.

The first half of the display tells the story of the war as Oldhamers saw it. It combines iconic items such as gas masks and ration books with local stories gathered this year for a new book about Oldham’s war. This book, When the Lights Come On Again: Oldham People and the Second World War will be officially launched when the exhibition opens.

The second part of the exhibition is a display of photographs documenting the annual March of the Living. This event draws young people from around the world to converge on the concentration camps of Eastern Europe in a united act of remembrance.

Bridging these two displays, visitors will have the chance to hear the stories of several people who fled from the horrors of Eastern Europe to make a new life in the Oldham area.

Echoes of War will be launched on 5 November with a day of free events. There will also be a World War II Film Night taking place on 8 December.
