Panoramica: Gayle Chong Kwan

21 November 2009 – 4 April 2010

Panarmonica

Enter a world of strange new landscapes made from food and other discarded materials. This exhibition brings together a number of pieces which explore aspects of the panorama in photographic, installation and sound work.

Gayle Chong Kwan’s work is influenced by contemporary tourism, waste and the personal and global politics of food. The result is a series of mythical imaginary panoramas and dioramas which in many ways echo the detail and sweeping historic vistas of the Gallery’s much-loved Oldham Panorama of 1876.

Installations include a tower of meat with its own accompanying soundscape and a large series of architectural models carved in miniature from used plastic food packaging. The long panoramic images are as much foodscapes as landscapes – some are built up from waste food whilst others are the result of exploring the memories and feelings that food can evoke.
