21 October 2006 – February 2007
Oldham born artist Alan Rankle is one of the leading artists of his generation to explore the environmental issues of the day through landscape art.
Landscapes for the Turning Earth: Paintings 1986 – 2006:
Landscapes for the Turning Earth is the first major retrospective of Alan’s paintings. His subjects are landscapes from around the world including Britain, Scandinavia and the United States. His paintings combine elements of traditional European landscape painting with his own distinctive style, thick layers of paint and dynamic washes of colour.
On the Edge of Arcadia:
On the Edge of Arcadia is a multi-media installation created especially for Gallery Oldham. Drawing on paintings from the Gallery’s Art Collection, photographs and early film footage, On the Edge of Arcadia explores Oldham’s industrial landscape. The work has been created in collaboration with composer Colin Gibson, filmmaker Kent Barker, sculptor Tim Nathan and writer and environmentalist Tom Burke.
