Cultural Quarter

Gallery Oldham forms the first phase of a dynamic and ambitious new Cultural Quarter for Oldham.
The second phase, a stunning £13million new Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre which is joined onto Gallery Oldham, opened April 2006. The building includes state of the art library and learning facilities. Architects Pringle Richards Sharratt, who also designed the award-winning Gallery Oldham, have made the most of stunning views across the moors in their design. Plans are underway for phase 3 of the Cultural Quarter development - refurbishment of the former Victorian library building to create a local history centre, bringing the Museum, Local Studies and Archives collections and services together under one roof.
The developing Cultural Quarter is also home to Oldham Theatre Workshop, Oldham Arts Development and Asian theatre company Peshkar, who are all based in the former Victorian museum building. Part of this building was refurbished in 2004 to create a new workshop and performance space for Oldham Theatre Workshop. Oldham Local Studies and Archives is situated nearby in the old Post Office building, in front of the former museum building.
